The Cathedral of Our Lady of Kazan is the cathedral of St. Petersberg dedicated to the Russian icon Our Lady of Kazan. Exhibiting Russian classical architecture, it was completed in 1811 replacing a wooden church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary. The location has continuously been the setting for many of Russia’s historical events including, where Tsesarevish Pavel Petrovich’s was married and the celebration point of a many Russian military victories.
The interior of Kazan Cathedral is adorned with the works of Russia’s greatest artists and sculptors including , I.P. Prokofyev, F.G. Gordeev , reliefs on the facade by I.P. Martos; S.S. Pimenov, and I.P. Martos just to name a few.
Amongst some of the cathedrals other beauties are the Tsar's gates, that were cast of silver and a new golden frame that is decorated with precious stones, made specifically for the Icon of Our Lady of Kazan. Kazan Cathedral was intended to be the main church of the country and the Russian answer to the Basilica of St. Peter's in Rome.
